How can you tell silver from silver plating?
1 Answer

To tell silver from silver plating, try holding a strong magnet near the item. If the magnet is attracted to the piece, it is most likely silver-plated, as solid silver is unlikely to be magnetic. You can also check the hallmarks. Markings that say silver plate, EP, EPNS, EPBM or BP indicate plating. Alternatively, you can have a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antiques dealer evaluate the piece. Explore a large selection of silver jewelry, tableware and decorative objects on 1stDibs.

Penguin Cocktail Shaker in Silver-Plated Metal, After Emile Schülke, Au Bain Marie Paris
An irresistibly charming penguin-form cocktail shaker, based on the iconic design originally conceived by Emile Schülke in 1936. This example was produced by the renowned Parisian firm Au Bain Marie during the 1970s–1980s, faithfully honoring the spirit of the original Art Deco creation.
Executed entirely in silver-plated metal, the shaker is sculptural and playful, yet elegantly balanced in its proportions. The stylized penguin form—both whimsical and refined—has become an enduring classic of cocktail and barware design. The hinged beak opens smoothly for pouring, while the body separates neatly for filling and cleaning, combining visual delight with practical functionality.
Equally suited as a functional cocktail accessory or as a sculptural decorative object, this penguin shaker...
