How do I identify a Pima basket?

1 Answer
How do I identify a Pima basket?
To identify a Pima basket, examine its bottom. An authentic Pima basket will have a grass base rather than a rod. Gently try to bend the basket, as slightly flexible sides are another characteristic of Pima baskets. Next, examine the weave itself. With a real Pima basket, you should not see large gaps in the weave. Finally, check to see if the basket has a herringbone pattern along the rim, another key characteristic of baskets produced by the Pima people. A certified appraiser or other knowledgeable expert can also be of assistance during the identification process. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Pima baskets.
