What a settee is called in English varies. Americans typically refer to this type of upholstered furniture as a sofa if it has a more upscale, formal look. Casual styles of settees are typically called couches. However, some people do use the terms sofa and couch interchangeably. Settees are typically small seats that can fit two or more people, but they aren’t as wide as couches or sofas. A settee is more intimate and offers more sitting room than an armchair.
