The difference between a formal suit and a tuxedo comes down to the details. Tuxedos typically feature satin fabric along the lapels and the sides of the trousers, while even the most formal suits typically lack this type of embellishment. Tuxedo trousers won't have belt loops, but those included in some formal suits do. Also, tuxedos normally have satin-covered buttons.
