What is the difference between pottery and porcelain?

The difference between pottery and porcelain is that one is a type of the other. Pottery is the general term for items produced out of clay. Porcelain is one of the three main categories of pottery. The term describes pieces made of a combination of clay and other materials, such as kaolin, silica, quartz and feldspar. Artisans fire porcelain at high temperatures, making it dense, smooth and translucent. The other two types of pottery include earthenware and stoneware.
