Jenny Saville is famous for her place in the history of art. As one of the Young British Artists, she was a part of a movement of painters and sculptors who drove the development of contemporary art in the UK during the 1980s and ’90s. She is particularly accomplished as a portrait artist. Marked by a thick application of paint, her large-format portraits portray her subjects in the nude in a realistic, empowering way, breaking from the tradition of the nude being stylized and exaggerated to please the male gaze.
