Why is it called Fauvism?
1 Answer

The story of why it is called Fauvism traces back to an art critic who reacted negatively when he first viewed examples of Fauvist art. After touring the Salon d'Automne in Paris, France, in 1905, critic Louis Vauxcelles said that the colorful work of Henri Matisse, André Derain, Albert Marquet and the other Fauvists looked as if it had been made by "fauves," or "wild beasts" in English. The Fauvists embraced the term as descriptive of their boldly colored, dramatically avant-garde art. Shop an assortment of Fauvist art on 1stDibs.
