About Ana Castillo: Ana Castillo is a multilingual poet, novelist, essayist, editor, feminist theorist, playwright, translator, human rights and environmental activist and visual artist. Castillo is a distinguished poet, novelist, short story writer, essayist, editor, playwright, translator and independent scholar. She earned a BA in art from Northeastern Illinois University, an MA from the University of Chicago, and a PhD from the University of Bremen, Germany. She holds an honorary doctorate from Colby College. She is the editor of La Tolteca, a journal devoted to “promoting the advancement of a world without borders and censorship.” Castillo’s commitment to human rights, free expression, and cultural exchange has shaped her career as a writer and scholar from the first. Calling her “the most daring and experimental of Latino novelists,” Commonweal contributor Ilan Stavans noted that Castillo’s “desire to find creative alternatives and to take risks is admirable.” Castillo’s work in poetry and prose is at once highly innovative and based on established oral and literary traditions. Throughout her career, Castillo has continued to marry her art, painting on canvas in oils and acrylic, and then drawing, initially using tools at hand, a Sharpie black fine point and a journal. The writer’s proliferation has carried over into drawings as diverse in subject as her poetry and stories. Finally, the loves of the artist and prolific writer have merged, co-existing and even collaborating in Castillo’s new projects. Born and raised in Chicago, Castillo credits the rich storytelling tradition of her Mexican heritage as the foundation for her writing. When she was nine years old, she wrote her first poems following the death of her grandmother. In high school and college Castillo was active in the Chicano movement, using poetry to advance political causes. Her first published volumes of verse—Otro canto (1977), The Invitation (1979), and Women Are Not Roses (1984)—“examine the themes of sadness and loneliness in the female experience,” according to Dictionary of Literary Biography contributor Patricia De la Fuente. Castillo’s Massacre of the Dreamers: Essays on Xicanisma (1994; reprinted 2014), based on her doctoral work at the University of Bremen, likewise explores the Chicana experience and the historical and social implications of Chicana feminism. It is a “provocative” collection, according to Marjorie Agosin in the Multicultural Review, and the work of a writer both “lyrical and passionate,” and “one of the country’s most provocative and original.” Castillo has continued to write both poetry and prose that engage with the politics of identity, nation, and religion, notably in the anthology Goddess of the Americas: Writings on the Virgin of Guadalupe (1996), a collection of writings about the patron saint of Mexico that Castillo edited because “what we could call the feminine principle is too absent from—is too denigrated by—Western society,” as she noted in a Publishers Weekly interview. Castillo’s other collections of essays and nonfiction include My Mother’s Mexican: New and Collected Essays (2015) and Black Dove: Mamá, Mi’jo, and Me (2016), which won the Lambda Literary Award for Bisexual Nonfiction and the International Latino Book Award.

Untitled RAG-1
By Rick Garcia
Located in Chicago, IL
Acrylic on canvas 30 x 40 inches Rick Garcia's RAG13 Collection is inspired by the observation that there has been a significant and permanent change in our public and private lives. These artworks use symbolism to illustrate how the ubiquitous presence of suspicion and the act of being a suspect have both become a way of life. Adults and children are shown as generic solid shapes with parts missing to indicate loss of identity and the relinquishing of certain rights. The watchful eye of authority is always present as a figure dressed in black with three white stripes. All of the figures have a red dot to symbolize the human heart; how we are all connected. This red dot also represents being a target or a person of interest. Overall, this latest series creates a surreal flow of images, colors, and shapes blending into a beautiful and poignant work of art. About the Artist: "Photography has been part of my creativity throughout my life and more recently has become influential in my abstract work on canvas. The magical shapes of water gracefully floating or scattering in mid-air reveals the true god-like essence of nature. I am fascinated studying these images of bright tiny mercury-like globes, silky trails, dancing droplets and crystal clear languid sheets. " Rick Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba, and very soon after, his parents relocated to Miami, Florida. He was always encouraged to follow his dream of pursuing and developing his talent in art. In later years he found a deep-rooted connection to surrealism, especially the work of Salvador Dali. Garcia had become obsessed with the unique images and amazing technique of the Spanish painter and he eventually traveled to Port Lligat, Spain to visit the home and surroundings of his mentor. After years of attending the Art Institute of Miami, where he refined his artistic vision in drawing and painting, he was soon earning an income from published illustrations. Garcia has enjoyed a rich and diverse career starting with the hit TV show "Miami Vice" commissioning him to create a mural on the side of a three story building, and used his paintings for interior shots. Apart from a growing number of private commissions, his distinctive images were commissioned by The United Nations Postal Administration in 1998 and 2003. His stamps brought awareness to the growing extinction of the rainforest and its inhabitants, and followed with the 50th Anniversary of the World Health Organization, bringing awareness to the vanishing supply of freshwater, where it earned him the prestige of the most beautiful stamp series of 2003. Garcia was chosen as an "Absolut Artist of the 90s" in the popular vodka ad campaign and with his second piece Absolut Electric, this further drew worldwide attention. 1998, 1999, and 2001 garnered him the distinction of official artist to The Grammy Awards where his creations influenced the look of the live broadcast and graced the covers of the official program book, CDs, posters, apparel, and other various items. His work included portraits of stars such as Destiny's Child, Ricky Martin, Coldplay, Santana, Celia Cruz, Black Eyed Peas, Imogen Heap and Kanye West. His life long passion of thoroughbred racing tapped him in 2008 to be the official artist of the 2008 Kentucky Derby Festival. Founder of Benihana, Rocky Aoki, gave Rick complete creative control to design a sushi restaurant on Miami Beach. Along with sculptor Bruce Hanners, they built and installed an 1800 sq. ft octopus designed by Rick to be the massive ceiling light...

Martin Saldaña “Lovely Gal” Oil on Board, Vibrant Mexican Folk Art, 20th Cent.
By Martin Saldana
Located in Denver, CO
“Lovely Gal” is a delightful oil on board painting by Martin Saldaña (1874–1965), a self-taught Mexican-American outsider artist celebrated for his vivid, whimsical depictions of childhood, rural life, and nature. This semi-abstract figurative work bursts with bold colors, featuring lively flowers and birds that reflect Saldaña’s deep connection to his Mexican heritage and love for the natural world. The painting is presented in a custom frame, measuring 30 ¾ x 25 ⅜ x 1 ⅝ inches, with an image size of 24 ½ x 19 ⅛ inches. Its charming composition and vibrant palette exemplify Saldaña’s signature folk art style, offering a joyful, nostalgic glimpse into his personal memories and cultural roots. About the Artist: Born in Rancho Nuevo, Mexico, Martin Saldaña led a modest life and worked as a cook at Denver’s iconic Brown Palace Hotel. Remarkably, he began his artistic career at age 76, attending children’s art classes at the Denver Art Museum, which sparked a prolific creative period lasting 15 years. Saldaña’s paintings are noted for their bold geometric forms, vivid colors, and naïve, folk art aesthetic, often reminiscent of traditional Mexican tapestries. Producing a new work nearly every three days, he captured landscapes, ranch life, animals, and childhood memories with heartfelt simplicity. Today, Saldaña’s enchanting artworks continue to captivate collectors, celebrating the rich visual culture and charm of Mexican-American folk art. ©David Cook Galleries...
