An abstract informal painting on paper by Anja Decker (Berlin 1908 - Munich 1995), executed in the late 1950s, during the formative years of postwar German abstraction. At this time, Decker was developing a personal language grounded in gesture and material, at a moment when Informal painting in Germany was taking shape independently from American models.
In the late 1950s, Anja Decker gravitated around the Galerie van de Loo circle in Munich, one of the most significant environments for experimental art in postwar Germany. Directed by Otto van de Loo, the gallery played a crucial role in the promotion of German Informalism and in the dialogue between European abstraction, the SPUR milieu and artists connected to the broader postwar avant-garde.
This painting reflects an abstraction conceived as a vital, corporeal impulse, in which line and color emerge through rhythm, pressure and spatial tension. Working with felt pen on paper, Decker transforms the surface into a field of direct experimentation, where abstraction functions as a physical language rather than a conceptual system.
Anja Decker was active from the late 1920s through the postwar decades. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Olaf Gulbransson, she developed an early experimental approach already in the 1930s, constrained at the time by the ideological limitations of the period. Only after 1945, in a newly open cultural context, was she able to fully articulate her abstract and informal vocabulary. From 1953 onward, she pursued this evolution with consistency, reaching a mature phase between 1958 and 1963, when critics noted affinities with both German Informalism and American Abstract Expressionism.
Her works are held in public collections including the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus (Munich), the Kunsthalle Emden, the Wolfsonian-FIU (Miami) and the Pabst Collection.
