About the Item

This vintage 1941 gouache painting on paper, titled Birth of Mind, signed and dated lower right, is a striking example of retrofuturism by Charles Ragland Bunnell, a prominent artist from the Broadmoor Academy. Part of Bunnell's Black and Blue series, the piece showcases his signature blend of abstraction and surrealism, reflecting the intellectual and emotional turmoil of the era. The artwork’s bold use of black and white tones captures the essence of Bunnell's unique style during the late 1940s, when he was exploring the boundaries between traditional and abstract expressionism. Framed Dimensions: 37 ½ x 31 x 1 ½ inches Artwork Dimensions: 28 x 22 inches (sight) Provenance: Estate of Charles Ragland Bunnell About the Artist: Charles Ragland Bunnell Born in 1897 in Missouri, Charles Bunnell developed an early passion for art in Kansas City, Missouri. After moving to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1915, Bunnell served in World War I and later used his GI Bill benefits to study at the Broadmoor Art Academy (now the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center). In 1922, he married fellow student Laura Palmer, and the couple later settled in a home just west of Colorado Springs. Bunnell transformed an old railroad boxcar into his personal studio, where he taught art lessons. Bunnell's artistic journey was heavily influenced by his studies under renowned artist Boardman Robinson in the 1930s. While Bunnell initially focused on American Scene and Modernist painting styles, his work began evolving into abstraction by the late 1930s. The personal losses he suffered during World War II, including the death of his young son, led Bunnell's work into a more Transcendental and Surrealist tone. By the late 1940s, Bunnell embraced Abstract Expressionism, introducing this bold new style to Colorado Springs, despite its exclusion from the Fine Arts Center’s curriculum under Robinson’s direction. His innovative approach to painting left a lasting impact on the region's art scene. Bunnell's legacy endures through his distinct, thought-provoking works, with pieces held in prominent collections and museums.
