Pantirer’s UNDERWATER series features large watercolor and acrylic pieces on textured paper. Usually painting and making collages on canvas, Pantirer found charm in the materiality of paper: how it absorbs and allows paint to “spill” organically as it bleeds into the fibers. Pantirer used her signature layering technique to let the colors of the watercolor paint build on, overlap, blend, and ultimately have conversations with each other. The depths of the sea inspire the UNDERWATER series: the color of waves at different times of the day and in multiple angles of light. The vivid hues of sea life and coral also influence the color selection, textures, and organic forms of the pieces. Pantirer insists that the pieces are “sisters,” encouraging the display of multiple pieces in the series as they interact with each other like organisms in nature.
Biography:
Nancy Bergman Pantirer’s paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the country and can be found in collections such as the University of Hartford, as well as corporate and private collections. She also had works for public art installations displayed in New York, New Jersey, Washington DC, and Connecticut.
Nancy received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford, as well as a Master of Arts from Montclair State College. She further refined her craft through graduate coursework at Tufts University Museum School in Boston and Pratt University in New York.
“My work is primarily an investigation in visual thinking. The relationships of color, surface, composition, as well as experience, are addressed in the exercise of creating each painting…The variables in this investigation are color, arrangements, and rearrangements that offer the viewer a new visual understanding,” said Nancy.
