About the Item
Perle Fine (American, 1905–1988)
Perle Fine’s work is distinguished by a refined sense of balance, gestural energy, and a deep engagement with the language of abstraction. A key figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement, she studied under Hans Hofmann and was among the few women actively participating in New York’s avant-garde circles of the 1940s and ’50s. Fine’s compositions evolved from bold, calligraphic gestures to structured explorations of color and form, reflecting her commitment to both spontaneity and precision. Despite facing the challenges of a male-dominated art world, she earned recognition among her peers and was one of the first women invited into the historic Artist’s Club. Later in life, she moved to Long Island’s East End, where she continued pushing the boundaries of abstraction. Though underrecognized in her time, Fine’s contributions to postwar American painting are increasingly acknowledged, securing her legacy within the history of modern art.

Perle Fine
Perle Fine was an Abstract Expressionist who produced works in multiple modes of abstraction during the 50 years of her prolific career. Fine’s artistic training began in her teens, when she studied illustration and graphic design; she also studied with Kimon Nicolaides, Hans Hofmann, Robert Blackburn, and Pruett Carter. In her own time, she would often go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to copy her favorite painters: Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Though she considers herself foremost a painter, Fine also experimented with etching, collage, and drawing. Though her brushwork became looser and heavier with time, Fine was always recognized for her ability to create visual rhythms using geometric forms, colors, and lines.
