Seated Girl, 1961
Charcoal Drawing on Paper

This is an exquisite, rare poignant early Robert Goodnough drawing on paper called "Seated Girl", illustrating the artist's unique form of abstraction. The work was done on a sheet of large notebook paper, which was removed from its original frame - bearing the label (shown) from the American Federation of Arts. (Former collection of Elliot Gruenberg, West New York, New Jersey). The framer discarded the frame with the label, but thankfully we were able to photograph the frame and make a copy the work was removed, so the original 1962 American Federation of the Arts label is shown here and the copy can be affixed when re-framed to preserve provenance.
More about Robert Goodnough
Defying labels, Abstract Expressionist Robert Goodnough created paintings that ranged in style from energetic Cubist pieces to color field paintings. Influenced by Cubism and his teacher Hans Hofmann—who influenced Goodnough’s artistic pivot to abstraction—Goodnough painted works that integrated elements of Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. Part of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists, he is best known for his signature style of large geometric shapes with bold colors and calligraphic lines in works such as Basement (n.d.). After moving towards color field paintings, he produced works like Vari-color gold (1976), which includes colored shards over backgrounds of colorful drips. He studied at Syracuse University and Ozenfant School of Fine Arts with Amédée Ozenfant. His work is in the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Robert Goodnough, 1917-2010
Though he is often grouped with the Abstract Expressionists, Robert Goodnough’s style incorporates representational forms that work against the abstract dogmas set by this movement. In this painting, Goodnough’s use of abstract shapes and primary colors are simple in concept, but complicated in their overlapping and varying sizes. This work has been exhibited at the Wittenborn Gallery in 1950, The Whitney Museum of American Art in 1957, the Museum of Modern Art in 1969, the National Academy in 2007, and Bowdoin College Museum of Art in 2009.
