About the Item

Original drawing by Rudolf Bauer, signed 'B' lower recto. Rudolf Bauer was born in 1889 into a comfortable, but not well-to-do, family on the border between Germany and Poland, and they moved to Berlin soon after. Though he showed artistic promise early in his education, the study of art was not practical for a young man of his class, and he clashed with a father who would not support artistic pursuits. At age 16, the artist fled home and began study at the Academy of Fine Arts. In the decade that followed, he developed a distinct style of figural drawing, with elegant, varied, contour outlines and elongated forms. He was a pioneering figure in early abstraction, whose “non-objective” paintings helped lay the groundwork for modern art in the twentieth century. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, he was associated with Der Sturm, the avant-garde gallery that nurtured artists including Kandinsky and Klee. Bauer’s work evolved from fluid, figurative drawing to compositions of pure color and form, reflecting his belief that art could communicate like music. After being released from Nazi imprisonment through the efforts of Peggy Guggenheim, he immigrated to the United States, where his work became part of the early Guggenheim collection. The gallery’s piece, a pencil drawing made while Bauer was imprisoned, captures his enduring precision and unbroken creative spirit even in confinement.
