Hunting Scene
By Jan Van der Straet
Located in Paris, Île-de-France
Attributed to Jan VAN DER STRAET, called Stradanus (Bruges, 1523 – Florence, 1605) Hunting Scene Pen and brown ink, brown wash and white heightening on prepared brown paper, 26 × 31 cm Unsigned Provenance Private collection, France This striking and highly accomplished drawing depicts a wild boar hunt in a wooded landscape, animated by numerous figures and animals. The dramatic energy of the foreground, where hounds and hunters engage the beast, is heightened by the bold use of white heightening, which models the forms and enlivens the surface. The background, structured by tall trees and populated with additional hunting scenes, lends the composition a theatrical depth. Attributed to Jan van der Straet, known as Stradanus, this work belongs to the artistic context of Medicean Florence, where the artist developed an important body of hunting scenes intended for illustration and engraving. Influenced by Italian Renaissance models as well as his native Flemish culture, Stradanus excelled in dynamic storytelling and elegant draftsmanship. The drawing may have been a preparatory study for one of the compositions from the celebrated Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium series, engraved in Antwerp under the supervision of Philips Galle...

Looking at the Jungle
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Looking at the Jungle" c.1980 is a watercolor on heavy watercolor paper by California artist Charlotte Huntley. It is signed at the lower left corner by the artist. The size is 16.5 x 26.5 inches. It is in excellent condition, the colors are fresh and bright, has never been framed. About the artist: Charlotte Huntley might have been a renowned graffiti artist – her earliest work consisted of drawing on walls. But fate intervened and she learned to control these urges with a formal education at Scripps College, Chouinard School of Art, and the Los Angeles County Art Institute. These early tendencies reemerged not just in painting, but in other artistic ways as well, to the benefit of community theaters in the San Francisco Bay Area and Chicago. She spent years as a professional puppeteer and set designer, and developing her own unique watercolor painting style. Charlotte’s use of pointillism. Charlotte Huntley AWS, June Workshop Instructor “Charlotte Huntley has special insights into color and fresh approaches to cliche subject matter. Her work in watercolor is truly unique. Charlotte adapts the Pointillism of Seurat and other post-Impressionists and makes it her own in watercolor. With Pointillism, distinct points of primary colors create the impression of a wide selection of secondary colors. The technique relies on the perceptive ability of the eye and mind of the viewer to mix the color spots into a fuller range of tones. Charlotte truly makes the most of this style of painting. Over her illustrious career, Huntley has been awarded a signature membership in 29 watercolor societies, including the American Watercolor Society, California Watercolor Association, Transparent Watercolor Soc. of America, Northwest Watercolor Society, and Watercolor West. Overall, Charlotte has received 45 Awards in National Exhibitions since 2000 – an impressive achievement. This imaginative Watercolor Artist has had over 575 paintings accepted in National Juried Art Exhibitions in 46 states, also Canada and Puerto Rico, with 113 Awards. Charlotte has proven to be a popular Juror, knowledgeable Juror, inspiring Workshop Instructor, and an Award-winning Author. The work of Charlotte Huntley is held in collections in the U.S. Canada and Puerto Rico as well as in some European country. Grand 19th Century English Marine Painting in Stunning Light
By John Wilson Ewbank
Located in London, GB
John Wilson Ewbank (1799 - 1847) Shipping in the Harbour, South Shields Oil on canvas 39.5 x 58 inches unframed 47.75 x 66.5 inches framed Provenance: Christie's October 2002; Lot 11. Fine Art Society; Private Collection This marvellous up to scale Ewbank is full of light and warmth and almost certainly his greatest work of the sort rarely - if ever - seen on the market. John W. Ewbank (4 May 1799–28 November 1847), was an English-born landscape and marine painter largely operational from Scotland. The Humber river is a large tidal estuary on the east coast of Northern England. Life Ewbank was born at Darlington on 4 May 1799, the son of Michael Ewbank, an innkeeper. He was adopted as a child by a wealthy uncle who lived at Wycliffe, on the banks of the River Tees, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Intended for the Roman Catholic priesthood, he was sent to Ushaw College, from which he absconded. In 1813 Ewbank was apprenticed to Thomas Coulson, an ornamental painter in Newcastle. In around 1816 he moved with Coulson to Edinburgh, where he had some lessons with Alexander Nasmyth. He found work both as a painter and a teacher. He was nominated in 1830 one of the foundation members of the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1833 he is listed as living at 7 Union Street on the eastern fringe of the New Town in Edinburgh. Works His sketches from nature were especially admired, and a series of 51 drawings of Edinburgh by him were engraved by W. H. Lizars for James Browne's Picturesque Views of Edinburgh (1825). He also made a reputation with cabinet pictures of banks of rivers, coast scenes, and marine subjects. As an illustrator he illustrated some early editions of Scott's Waverley Novels and one edition of Gilbert White...
