Colin Coots (b. 1944) is a celebrated equestrian artist known for his evocative paintings that beautifully capture rural life and the bond between humans and animals. Raised on a farm in Western New York State, he developed a deep affinity with the countryside, which later became a defining theme in his work.
In 1968, Coots graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio. Following his studies, he spent time as a VISTA volunteer in an Alaskan Eskimo village before pursuing a diverse career, including roles as an art teacher, farm labourer, tree surgeon, and museum preparator. Despite these various occupations, his passion for art remained constant, and he continued to paint and sculpt throughout.
In 1986, he transitioned to a full-time career as a painter after leaving the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum in Rochester, New York. Since then, he has undertaken numerous educational projects, given art demonstrations, and exhibited his work widely. His paintings are now held in private collections both in the United States and internationally.
Coots’ artistic style is spontaneous and expressive, focusing on the essence of his subjects rather than meticulous detail. His work predominantly features horses, dogs, and landscapes, reflecting his deep connection to the countryside. He describes his approach as an attempt to “compress time and space,” creating striking yet simple images that resonate with viewers.
Through his distinctive style and deep understanding of rural life, Colin Coots has established himself as a distinguished equestrian artist, capturing the timeless beauty of the equestrian world with warmth and sensitivity.
