About the Item

This interesting mythological watercolour painting on paper is by noted Welsh artist Glyn Morgan. Morgan was a noted Welsh artist, initially taught by Ceri Richards in Cardiff and later a Benton End student where he was greatly influenced by Cedric Morris who proved to be his main source of inspiration throughout his artistic career. Painted in 1965 it is entitled verso as Achilles and the Centaur. (see below for a synopsis of the legend). The legend involving Chiron, the centaur, and Achilles is a well-known story from Greek mythology. Chiron, distinguished among centaurs for his wisdom, kindness, and knowledge of medicine, played a significant role in the upbringing and education of many Greek heroes, including Achilles. Morgan developed a deep interest in Greek Mythology following spending time in Greece and this work may well have been exhibited with others of the same theme at the Chappel Galleries in 1996. Signed and dated 65 lower right. Provenance. Details inscribed verso. Condition. Watercolour on paper, unframed 17 inches by 14 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a water colour frame with hessian mount, framed size is 26 inches by 23 inches and in good condition. The legend involving Chiron, the centaur, and Achilles is a well-known story from Greek mythology. Chiron, distinguished among centaurs for his wisdom, kindness, and knowledge of medicine, played a significant role in the upbringing and education of many Greek heroes, including Achilles. Achilles, the son of the mortal Peleus and the nymph Thetis, was sent to Chiron to be raised and trained. Chiron, who resided on Mount Pelion, was renowned for his skill in hunting, medicine, music, and prophecy. Under Chiron’s guidance, Achilles became a formidable warrior, renowned for his strength and skill in battle. This training played a crucial role in Achilles’ life, especially in his later exploits during the Trojan War. Chiron’s influence on Achilles was not just in martial skills; he also imparted wisdom and moral guidance. This blend of physical training and moral education was a hallmark of Chiron’s teaching method, setting him apart from the other centaurs, who were generally known for their unruly and savage nature. The story of Chiron and Achilles reflects the Greek ideal of a hero being shaped by both physical prowess and moral integrity. Chiron’s role as a mentor to Achilles and other heroes like Hercules underscores the importance of wisdom and guidance in the development of a hero in Greek mythology. Dante Sisofo. Glyn Morgan was a Welsh artist, born in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, in 1926. His artistic education began at Cardiff College of Art in 1942, where he studied under renowned Welsh artist Ceri Richards. It was during his time at Cardiff that Glyn was first introduced to the work of Cedric Morris, who proved to be his main source of inspiration throughout his artistic career. In 1944 Glyn studied at Benton End (formally known as the East Anglian School of Drawing and Painting), where his friendship with Cedric Morris began. Benton End afforded space for Morris, Lett-Haines and many of their students to live as well as work at the school which contributed to the communal atmosphere and encouraged its laissez-faire but inspiring approach to learning. Jon Lys Turner's biography of the illustrator Richard Chopping and his partner Dennis Wirth-Miller, both alumni of the East Anglian School, characterises it as 'a place for the free exchange of artistic ideas and techniques'. The students were given a 'nom de plume' by Lett Haines. The school was anti-hierarchical as well as anti-patriarchal, with little in the way of structure or rules, and provided a setting for sexual as well as artistic liberation. While Morris focused on the students' work, Lett-Haines oversaw the school's administration as well as cooking two meals a day and thanks to Morris' work in the vegetable garden and Lett-Haines' enthusiasm for cooking, the community at Benton End did not experience hardships on the scale of wartime London. Through the 1940s and 1950s Benton End became the centre of a diverse community of twentieth-century artists, writers, and horticulturalists. Friends and visitors included the artists John Nash and Francis Bacon (October 1909 - April 1992) and the writers Ronald Blythe ( November 1922 - January 2023) and Stephen Spender (February 1909–July 1995). Glyn and Morris painted each other many times, and Glyn organised a Benton End exhibition at Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery in 1985, as well as contributing to the 2002 book ‘Benton End Remembered’. Glyn went on to attend Camberwell School of Art from 1947-1948 and during his time there he also taught painting at schools in Suffolk, Somerset and even Greece. His travels in Greece inspired an interest in Greek mythology, and he produces a series of paintings inspired by Greek mythology which were shown at the Chappel Galleries in 1996. Classical music also inspired his work, and his roots in Welsh history are also present in his work. Interestingly, he was very open about how difficult he sometimes found painting – he said in 1994 at the time of his and Cedric Morris’ exhibition at the Chappel Galleries ‘My pictures were, and still are, a battlefield’ (Telegraph’s obituary). The Chappel Galleries in Colchester exhibited Glyn’s work from the mid 90s through to 2014. He held numerous other solo shows, including at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth in 2006.

The artwork and its presentation is in very good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The watercolor is signed and dated lower left. Geoffrey Key is a leading figure in Northern contemporary art, widely regarded as Lancashire’s greatest living artist, noted for his realism, his expressive use of bold color and his graphic, linear style. His striking works, now much in demand, have established him as a major player of post war British figurative art. Geoffrey Key was born in Rusholme, Manchester in 1941. His mother, Marion, worked as an illustrator and encouraged him to draw and he took to this easily and with great enthusiasm. He was educated at Manchester's High School of Art, whose headmaster, Ernest Goodman, established the Salford Art Club. It is fitting that many years later, after Goodman's death, its members chose Geoffrey Key as Honorary President. In 1958 Key enrolled at the Manchester Regional College of Art, where he was tutored by the sculptor Ted Roocroft and the painter Harry Rutherford, both of whom influenced him greatly. After gaining the National Diploma of Design and the Diploma of Associateship of Manchester, the latter with distinction, Key took up a postgraduate scholarship in sculpture. His academic awards include the Heywood Medal in Fine Art and the Guthrie Bond Travelling Scholarship. Geoffrey Key’s early work included an important period of development during which he concentrated on painting and drawing a specific area of the Derbyshire landscape, the Whiteley Nab hill, south of Glossop. Key created literally hundreds of images of this one landscape and later revealed that the sole purpose of this dedicated period of study, was to build upon the firm foundation established by his academic training, whilst divesting himself of the influences he had absorbed in order to arrive at his own personal artistic language. In other words, this is where he found his own style. After graduating Key worked as a teacher at Duke Street Secondary Modern in Broughton, Salford, which later became Broughton Modern. In every spare moment though he painted and his talent was quickly recognised. As the likes of Salford Art Gallery, The Rutherston Loan Collection and North West Arts began to acquire his work he made the decision to relinquish his salary and to become a full time artist. Key was elected to membership of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts in 1968 and was a prize winner in 1971. During this time he was also commissioned by three North West England based companies – Mather & Platt, Richard Johnson & Nephew, and Wilson’s Brewery. The Richard Johnson & Nephew pictures are now held by the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester. In the 1980s the French company Société des Caves de Roquefort also commissioned Key’s work and further successful exhibitions were held in both the UK and abroad. In 1987 the Manchester Evening News asked Key to write an article on L. S. Lowry, who Key had known well, for a feature marking the centenary of the artist's birth. This article was accompanied by a contemporary drawing of Lowry by Key. Apart from LS Lowry, Key is arguably Lancashire’s best-known and most collected contemporary artist. Key says ‘I knew Lowry and he was a lovely...
