Authentic drawing from the early 20th century by the well-known French painter Gustave Guetant (1873-1953).
Technique: pencil and charcoal on paper.
Bottom right stamp: ATELIER GUETANT.
Drawing on two sides of the paper:
A pair of panthers is depicted on one side, and on another side is a sketch of a cat-like feline.
Biographical notes on the artist:
Gustave Guetant.
Originally from a Marseille family whose father Louis was a relief artist, Gustave Guétant was initially attracted to drawing and wanted to become a painter.
From 1893 he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille.
In 1896 he became his city's retired artist after winning the sculpture competition.
From 1896 to 1900 he was a student at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris.
He has exhibited regularly since 1903 at the Salon des artistes français, of which he is a member. Sensitive to the artistic development brought about by the Nancy School, whose leading representatives he attended, as well as to the evolution of the Decorative Arts, he became a member of the jury in 1913 and remained so throughout his life.
He was also a member of the Society of Aquarellists, where he exhibited in 1908. In 1909, the artist recognized by his peers became an officer of the academy.
He illustrates many books.
His patiently acquired knowledge from observing animals, his deep admiration for living, secret beings-he attributes specific feelings and sensations to them beyond their sophisticated instincts-his intense discussions with like-minded artists generate the drawings and sculptures of his maturity. Guétant's fluid or animal art is the exact opposite of the caricatured illustration or shocking or provocative expressionism that characterizes the pencils of war propaganda.
