About the Item
A 65 million year old sea creature is captured here through the art of Gyotaku by Jeff Conroy. After inking and taking impressions of a reproduction fossil Ammonite shell and combining it with an actual octopus impression, the artist then uses watercolor pencils on the ink outline to bring this fossil creature into animated existence. The tinted color and texture of the mulberry paper creates the illusion of swirling water. The paper itself has a soft hue and slightly wavy texture adding the overall feel of the artwork. This artwork is matted and framed in a simple white wooden frame measuring 26h x 32.5w x 1d inches.

Gyotaku - A Japanese word translated from "gyo" meaning fish and "taku" meaning stone impression and is believed to get its inspiration from Chinese stone rubbings of calligraphy, which then gave rise to printing . This tradition dates back to the mid-1800s and was used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own. Prints were made using Sumi ink and Washi paper. It is rumored that Samurai would settle fishing competitions using Gyotaku prints. This original form of Gyotaku is still utilized today, and can be seen hanging in fish and tackle shops all over Japan.

Stay Golden Pony Boy - Gyotaku Style Sumi Ink Painting of an Octopus, Framed
By Jeff Conroy
Located in Chicago, IL
A small octopus is inked in the Japanese style of Gyo-Taku print making. Using sumi ink to "print" the octopus, the artist then embellishes it with colored pencil to convey an extraordinary dimensionality. By printing it on Mulberry paper, which mimics the swirl of water, the artist achieves a beautiful aesthetic. The artwork is matted and framed in a white wooden frame measuring 18.25h x 24.25w x 1d inches.

Stardust Cephalopod, Original Contemporary Abstract Nautical Mixed Media Work, 2015
11" x 8.5" (HxW) Collage and Pen on Paper
With clear inspiration from natural botanicals and oceanic life, artist Jenny Brown combines found imagery and her own mark making to create delicate yet bold designs. This work features a gray background that allows a colorful combination of paper ephemera melded together into a fantastical creature. Fine white lines emerge like tentacles, and small white dots scatter around the composition, bringing the work to life.
Images with frames are examples only; this work comes unframed.
Artist Commentary:
Stardust Cephalopod is a bioluminescent flowering squid, existing both in the depths of the sea and the far reaches of the Milky Way Galaxy. She melds together the sciences of the oceans and the stars, linking the two natural spaces as one beautiful entity. Stardust Cephalopod is a mixed media work created with pen, ink, & collage.
