About the Item
This intimate and expressive drawing by Patricia Traub presents a poignant study of African elephants rendered with charcoal pencil, graphite, white chalk and red conté on paper. With keen observational skill and sensitivity to form, Traub captures the weight, presence, and quiet dignity of these iconic creatures. The nuanced layering of media brings out rich textural contrasts and a subtle sense of movement, while the limited palette focuses attention on gesture, anatomy, and emotional resonance.
Traub is known for her lifelong engagement with wildlife and conservation and for sketching animals directly from life during her extensive travels across Africa and beyond. Her work reflects a deep empathy for her subjects and a thoughtful exploration of the natural world, making this drawing both a formal study and a contemplative homage to one of its most majestic species

Patricia Traub
Patricia Traub (b. 1947, Allentown, PA) is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the York Academy of the Arts. She continued her studies in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumièr. Traub is a unique combination of artist, conservationist, and wildlife advocate. These passions have facilitated her international travels to Borneo, Egypt, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Norway, South Africa, and Tanzania. Traub studies and sketches animals from direct observation. Her paintings typically focus on a single subject, thoughtfully positioned within spare spaces and tranquil, black backgrounds. She says, "The underlying context in my painting is about our responsibilities to all living things and the environment we all live in."
Traub has exhibited widely in both solo and group shows and has garnered numerous awards. Her work is found in both private and public collections, including the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Woodmere Museum of Art, and the Allentown Art Museum.
