About the Item
Cricket on Branch - 2nd Generation Lingnan School Bird and Flower Painting
Beautifully executed painting of a cricket on a branch by Zhao Shao'ang 趙少昂 (Chinese b. 1905 d. 1998.) This piece builds on the tradition of Chinese "bird and flower," or Huaniaohua, paintings while also incorporating aspects of western realism and Japanese calligraphy practices. In this composition a branch stretches across the center, with a cluster of leaves at one end and a cricket perched at the other. The leaves are rendered in bold ink strokes, with layers of light wash overlapped by bold, dark black strokes. The cricket stands on the end of the branch, with its body aligned to the edge of the moon behind it. The cricket is detailed but not overly rendered, with brown, green, and red inks setting it apart from the rest of the piece. The background of the piece is covered in a light grey wash, with what appears to be the moon partially obscured by clouds.

Zhao Shao'ang was born in Panyu in the Guangdong province of China in 1905. In his youth, he received private instruction in art. One of his instructors was Gao Qifeng, a founder of the Lingnan, or New National Painting, school which Zhao would eventually come to be identified with. Zhao began teaching at the Foshan Art Academy in 1928 at the age of 23. In 1930, he was awarded the gold medal at the Brussel International World Fair and subsequently founded the Lingnan Art Studio in Guangzhou. Despite receiving a professorship in the Fine Arts Department at Guangzhou University in 1948, Zhao decided to move to Hong Kong in that year. Once in Hong Kong, he re-established the Lingnan Art Studio. He traveled and exhibited extensively throughout his career, with shows in cities such as Nanjing, Tianjin, and Beijing. He remained based in Hong Kong until his death in 1998.
The Lingnan School was established during the late Qing dynasty, with the first generation flourishing then and during the Republican era. It sought to modernize traditional Chinese art practices by incorporating the use of Western realism as well as Japanese art traditions. It was originally founded by the brothers Gao Jianfu and Qifeng with fellow artist Chen Shuren. The movement fell out of popularity during the Second Sino-Japanese war, due to its Japanese influence but was later revived by a second generation of painters, which Zhao Shao'ang was a part of. Zhao’s artwork is a great example of the Lingnan school as it takes the traditions Chinese genre of “flower and bird” painting and diversifies it with a mix of realism and Japanese-style calligraphy.

A Chinese painting featuring two cranes in flight against a backdrop of stylized waves. The painting is rendered in traditional Chinese style, with flowing brushstrokes and a muted color palette dominated by blues, whites, and earth tones. The cranes are depicted with detailed plumage, their wings outstretched as they soar through the air. The waves are represented in a swirling, abstract manner, suggesting movement and energy. Chinese painting is known for its emphasis on capturing the essence of the subject matter rather than a literal representation, and this piece exemplifies that approach. The use of ink and color on silk or paper is typical of this art form, as is the focus on natural themes such as birds and landscapes. he style is reminiscent of traditional Chinese ink wash painting, which emphasizes brushwork and capturing the spirit of the subject. The swirling water and mountain details could also be interpreted as fractal art...
