About the Item
In my pictures I try to combine the visual and the conceptual. For me, drawing is a medium of knowledge which, beyond direct expression, makes visible material and immaterial forces, plastic processes in the widest sense. So I see the drawing as an "extension of a thought", because it directly reflects the creative processes. The spontaneous and direct way of working is one of the most important characteristics of my art. At the same time, my works are characterized by a free handling of form and a strong colorfulness. My drawings are mostly made in a mixed technique of water pencils, pencils and acrylic paints. :: Drawing :: Expressionism :: This piece comes with an official certificate of authenticity signed by the artist :: Ready to Hang: No :: Signed: Yes :: Signature Location: bottom middle :: Paper :: Portrait :: Original :: Framed: No

Portrait of a Woman #2
By David Sharpe
Located in Brooklyn, NY
David Sharpe, second-generation Chicago Imagist — 1991 figurative portrait, graphite & watercolor on paper.
A psychologically charged seated figure defined by crisp graphite contour and more expansive, saturated watercolor passages. Sharpe’s post-Imagist language—bold figuration, surreal inflection, and emotional intensity—animates the mask-like face and the calligraphic mapping of the garment and chair, setting up a vivid dialogue between observation and invention. Dated 1991, this work embodies the Chicago school’s distinctive blend of wit and bite while remaining intimately drawn and friendly in scale.
Institutional collections (selection): Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art; Mary & Leigh Block...
