Edme-Jean Pigal , born in Paris , on February 2 , 1798 and died at Sens on September 16 , 1872, is a French genre painter , draftsman , engraver and lithographer . From the 1820s to the end of the 1830s , Pigal produced numerous lithographs caricaturing the customs of his day and the social classes, ridiculing the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie and the 'vulgarity' of the working classes. His favorite subjects were the street urchins of Paris, servants, coachmen, janitors, and old bachelors .
