About the Item
French Impressionist pastel on paper of a Provençal lunch. Signed bottom right but as yet not deciphered. Presented in a white frame under perspex.
A charming, highly colourful and vivid pastel of a couple having lunch on the terrace outside their home. The intensity of the Provençal summer light is apparent. The cypresses majestically tower in the background. The couple are fully engaged in chatting over lunch under the vine covered trellis. The cat lays out in the warmth of the sun. Planted terracotta pots are dotted around the house and garden and the house glows in the summer sun. A softness is added to the composition through the medium of pastel used by the artist.
The composition is reminiscent of the garden scenes of Henri Matisse who was inspired at the start of the 20th century by the light of the South of France and led to the short lived but influential Fauvist artistic movement.
Matisse said: “What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity…something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue.” Very much the inspiration for this painting.
