The School of Athens after Raphael • 18th century Pen and Ink Wash Drawing • Later glazed wood frame, ca. 62 x 78.5 cm • Mounted behind a modern arched matt. This large drawing is after the famous fresco with the title ‘The School of Athens’ painted at in the Vatican in 1508 by Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, 1483-1520) by an unknown, but very accomplished artist. Unfortunately, there is no signature, which is not unusual, as the artist was copying/studying an old master. Maybe a foreign student visiting Rome and selling souvenir drawings of the local sites to Grand Tour Travellers, to finance his cost of living. Drawn in ink on laid paper (probably) also with a Dutch Watermark J. Honig Zoonen like its counterpart ‘The Parnassus’. I have not inspected the sheet out of the frame, however I am confident this drawing dates also to the second half of the 18th century. The drawing has been re-mounted and framed by the previous owner about twenty years ago. I am also selling a matching version of ‘The Parnassus’ after Raphael’s fresco by the same unknown artist. Condition: The frame shows signs of wear and tear – the drawing has a few stains/foxing. The sheet is damaged along the edges, where an old mount was glued on – this is hidden behind the new mount. Depending on shipping destination, it will be necessary to remove the glass panel of this large drawing - This is to be discussed with the buyer.
