About the Item

Original cover for Needlecraft Magazine, published January 1928 This delightful artwork graced the January 1928 cover of Needlecraft Magazine, offering a warm domestic scene that perfectly embodies the spirit of the publication. The image features a young mother, elegantly draped in a floral kimono, kneeling on a circular rug as she tenderly bundles her child in a coordinated knitted scarf, hat, sweater, and pants. Winter’s keen eye for detail in capturing the intricate textures of the textiles makes this a truly charming and effective promotion of the needle arts. This fresh-to-market pastel is accompanied by a copy of the original magazine. Alice Beach Winter was an American illustrator and painter who was recognized for her depictions of children and scenes of domestic motherhood, which graced magazine covers and advertisements for decades. After moving to New York City in 1904, she honed her skills at the Art Students League, studying under notable artists like John Twachtman and Joseph DeCamp. Winter’s ability to capture the innocence and tenderness of childhood made her a sought-after talent. Her illustrations appeared in children’s books, popular publications such as Needlecraft Magazine, and advertisements for major commercial clients including Ivory Soap. Beyond her successful career in illustration and portraiture, Winter was also a dedicated advocate for social change. A committed socialist and suffragist, she contributed cover illustrations to the socialist monthly magazine The Masses, where she also served as editor. While Winter’s artistic endeavors also included large Impressionist landscapes, it was her captivating portrayals of mothers and children that defined her legacy in American illustration. Alice and her husband, Charles Allan Winter, eventually settled in East Gloucester, Massachusetts, where their home and studio became a gathering place for their prominent artist friends, such as John Sloan, Stuart Davis, and Paul Cornoyer, among others.
