About the Item
This painting is a copy of Berardo Luini's ' Christ among the Doctors ' the painter being, ascribed to the reverse side, Constance C. Nugent. The date of this painting is considered to be around 1832-1850. We have very little confirmed biography of the artist, and the available biographies are some what confusing.
Constance Nugent was apparently a Scottish painter of botanical illustrations with a specialty of painting British Fungi which captured finite detail and the precision of the make up of flora. Clearly a very accomplished professional artist who mastered not just still life but a painting by one of the World's most famous painters. The restoration of this work encountered some discrepancies with the construction, firstly the painting is either on board or canvas board the restorer was undecided but it was prepared as an oil painting would be with a white Gesso type surface, secondly the medium was watercolour but with an addition of gum Arabic which is used to enhance the body of the watercolor paint, hence giving the picture an oil painted finish. Therefore although the painting is predominantly watercolor the finish is of very high and exceptional quality as to appear to be thinly painted oil .
Christ among the Doctors was publicly held at the London National Gallery from 1832 the painter is believed to be Bernardo Luini 1480-1532 and was painted between 1515-1530, therefore it is apparent that Nugent copied the picture from the Gallery as artists were permitted to do so under guidance from the Trustees and management. Nugent must have had a history of accomplishment to do so.
Apparently her works are still capable of inspiring both artist and botanists today.

Bernardo Luini (c. 1480–1532) was one of the most accomplished Lombard painters of the High Renaissance and the leading follower of Leonardo da Vinci active in Milan during the early sixteenth century. Probably born in Dumenza near Lake Maggiore, Luini is documented in Milan from the first decade of the 1500s, where he absorbed Leonardo’s pictorial language—most notably the soft sfumato, graceful figural types, and refined emotional restraint—while maintaining a clarity and decorative elegance distinct from his master.
Luini worked extensively for ecclesiastical and civic patrons, producing altarpieces, devotional panels, and monumental fresco cycles. Among his most celebrated works are the frescoes in Santa Maria degli Angeli, Lugano; Santa Maria della Pace, Milan; and San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, Milan, where his lyrical narrative style and harmonious compositions are particularly evident. His Madonnas and female saints, characterized by gentle expression and idealized beauty, became especially influential in Lombard painting.
Though long subsumed under the shadow of Leonardo, modern scholarship recognizes Luini as an independent and highly skilled artist whose work reflects a synthesis of Leonardesque invention with local Lombard traditions. His oeuvre played a central role in shaping Milanese painting in the decades following Leonardo’s departure from the city.
