Edward Burra (1905–1976) was one of the most original and idiosyncratic British artists of the 20th century. Though best known for his vibrant urban scenes and surreal, jazz-infused imagery, Burra also designed extensively for theatre and ballet, producing sets and costumes for productions such as Miracle in the Gorbals and Carmen. Trained at the Chelsea School of Art, his work defied easy categorisation, blending social realism with fantasy and wit. Burra’s paintings are held in major public collections including Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the British Museum.
