The small but exquisite drawing, made in a mixed technique of pencil and gray watercolor, depicts a mythological scene in which a group of naked putti are seen dancing and holding hands around a "Herma."
Questa tipologia di sculture, molto comune nei giardini dal Cinquecento in poi, composte da una base e una figura a mezzo busto, deriva dall'arte greca e si trovavano di solito nei crocevia delle strade, il nome è legato al dio Ermes che era il soggetto più comunemente raffigurato.
The drawing is titled "Dancing Putti" and signed "Prof. Enrico Pollastrini" in the lower center. Enrico Pollastrini fu un artista nato a Livorno che si formò a Firenze sotto la guida di Giuseppe Bezzuoli, divenendo a sua volta professore all'Accademia. La dicitura "Prof." ci aiuta come termine post quem per la datazione, ovvero 1853, quando Pollastrini entrò effettivamente di ruolo
