About the Item

The Magician is an original artwork realized between the XIX century and the XX century by Henry Somm. Original black and white pen drawings on paper. The artwork represents a man, maybe a magician, with a baton and hat in front of him Good conditions except for some foxings, stains and a missing part of paper on the lower right corner. The drawing is hand-signed with the initials of the artist on the lower right corner. Henry Somm (Rouen 1844 – Parigi 1907) François Clément Sommier, best known under the pseudonym “Henry Somm,” was born in Rouen in 1844. He attended the local École municipale des beaux-arts and went on in 1867 to Paris, where he studied under Isidore Pils (1813-1875).He moved to Paris in 1860. Between 1873 and 1876 he made many engravings for the magazine Paris à l'eau forte and then at the Cadart printing house. In 1879 and 1889 he participated in the Impressionist exhibitions from the Durand-Ruel gallery in Paris. He collaborated with the newspapers: Le Chat noir, La Charge, La Cravache, La Chronique parisienne, High Life, Frou-Frou, Le Rire. He wrote the comedy in one act La Berline de l'Emigré ou Jamais trop tard pour bien faire, created for Le Chat noir, on December 25, 1885. Somm left a large number of drawings and watercolors of Paris made in plein air.

Otto Schubert Pen & Ink Fairy Tale is an original pen & ink sketch 1927 from one of the artist's illustrations for a fairy tale. There is a father and mother fox talking to two younger versions of themselves. They are all dressed in human clothes at the door of their house with smoke coming out of the chimney. Next to the house is a tree with a mountain in the background and another house in the distance. There is gardening equipment here and there. In the foreground we see sketches of a rabbit in different poses with some writing in German below the middle image.The artis'ts pencil signature is bottom right. A rare opportunity to own an original signed sketch by this artist. There is a wrinkle in the bottom right side otherwise normal wear and in fair condition. Provenance: Estate of the artist Exhibited: London, Sally Hunter Fine Art, Albert Rutherston, Drawings, Theatre Designs and other Treasures, 2016, no.65 The present work was illustrated in Cymbeline, published by Ernest Benn in 1923. The series was a collaboration between Rutherston and Harley Granville-Barker following on from their work together 11 years earlier at the Savoy Theatre and celebrating the quatercentenary of the Shakespeare Folio edition. Born Albert Daniel Rothenstein, he was the youngest of the six children of Moritz and Bertha Rothenstein, German-Jewish immigrants who had settled in Bradford, Yorkshire in the 1860s. He and his siblings proved to be a hugely talented and artistic family, his elder brother became Sir William Rotherstein (1872-1945), the artist and director of the Royal College of Art; two of his other siblings, Charles Rutherston and Emily Hesslein, both accumulated major modern British and French art collections and his nephew Sir John Rothenstein was direct of the Tate Gallery. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School before moving to London in 1898 to study at the Slade School of Art where he became close friends with Augustus John and William Orpen. He met Walter Sickert during a painting holiday in France in 1900 and by introducing Sickert to Spencer Gove became instrumental in the beginning of the Camden Town Group. He was one of Sickert’s most frequent companions and was one of the original members of the Fitzroy Street Group.
