About the Item
A fine graphite drawing of a circus clown with guitarist by British / Canadian artist Jack Leonard Shadbolt (1909-1998). Shadbolt was born in Shoeburyness, Essex, England and his family emigrated to British Columbia, Canada when he was very young. He studied at Victoria College, the Provincial Normal School, and at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts. His teaching career started in the British Columbia public school system where he taught in Duncan, and at Kitsilano (Vancouver) High School. In 1938, he began teaching at the Vancouver School of Art where he worked until retirement in 1966. He became known for his abstract painting, printmaking, murals, graphics, and illustrations. Graphite on paper, signed lower left, with gift inscription from the artist dated 1949 attached on verso, matted and framed under glass in a molded giltwood frame. Some slight wrinkling under the mat. Dimensions: 9.5 in H x 11 in W, sight; 18.5 in H x 19.5 in W, framed.
