Jean-Baptiste Le Paon was an 18th-century French painter and watercolorist. He studied with the famous military painter François-Joseph Casanova and he joined the army in 1756 and specialized in battle scenes. He exhibited at the Salon in Paris between 1779 and 1782. He was active in Paris and in Versailles.
Jean-Baptiste Le Paon was at the 1925 exhibition “The French Landscape from Poussin to Corot” at the Petit Palais (number 179 : “Manoeuvres de la Maison du Roi sur les Coteaux de Satory”). Several of his works are today at the Condé museum in the Château de Chantilly.
Our drawing depicts a military scene near a castle with a soldier on a horse, a horse arching and other soldiers, crossing the river and the bridge.
Another genre scene, a painting at the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw, Poland “The Prince of Nassau Hunting a Jaguar” and dated 1784 is close to our watercolor. We find the same arching horse, a soldier on horseback in motion, in a landscape with a castle.
