Baseball is a classic American game, enjoyed for generations and captured by many different artists in various interpretations. Artists like Elaine de Kooning, Thomas Eakins, R.B. Kitaj and many more have taken a swing at capturing this well-loved game. The present watercolor was likely painted in the first part of the 20th century by J.F. Copeland, a presently unknown artist but one that was clearly gifted. His composition and grasp of scale, placing the figures in the middle ground of an expansive grassy field, hints at a knowledge of depth.
