About the Item

Gorgeous Pastel on paper “Dance”, studio of Leopold François Kowalski, early 20th century. This exceptional pastel depicts a group of women dancing in a romantic, ethereal spring landscape. The delicate figures, soft, luminous tones, and warm, almost golden, atmosphere that envelops the scene are particularly striking. The women hold hands, forming a serpentine chain that captures a specific moment within the dynamic scene. Except for the central figure in the foreground, who turns to look at the viewer, all the others appear absorbed in their own thoughts and in the dance. IT,S NOT SIGNED Workshop of Leopold François Kowalski (1856–1931), a Polish-born painter known for his focus on Impressionism and Romantic themes, particularly those dealing with movement and the human figure. Kowalski was especially skilled at depicting dance scenes and female figures. His landscapes of the Norman and Breton countryside often reveal a strong Post-Impressionist influence, with their qualities of shifting light and reflections, and he was primarily known for his extraordinary domestic scenes set against magnificent landscapes. Much of his work focuses on Victorian nymphs dancing among fields of flowers, an incredibly popular subject in the late 19th century. As a young boy, he took night classes at the National Academy of Design, and first exhibited his work there in 1861. The first years of his career were spent as an engraver at the American Bank-Note Company, while at the same time attempting to establish himself as a painter. In 1870, at the relatively late age of thirty-two, Shirlaw travelled to Europe to study. Prevented from settling in Paris by the Franco-Prussian War, he instead studied in Munich, where he joined the small group of American painters working in the city, including Frank Duveneck and William Merrit Chase...
