About the Item

One of the leading lights of the Neapolitan Baroque, Luca Giordano gained international acclaim during his lifetime. He travelled widely throughout Europe and was commissioned by some of the greatest patrons of his day to undertake major projects in Naples, Venice, Florence, and Madrid. Giordano was a prolific painter and draughtsman, and his rapid execution earned him the nickname “Fa Presto,” or “work quickly.” The artist’s legendary speed is here self-evident in the bold and fluent lines, as well as the scattered dots, both quickly applied to the paper. The graphic style is essential and spare—a minimal number of lines are applied to describe the forms of the figures and the interior setting in which we witness them—and the drawing is enhanced by a subtle application of an ink wash. The Annunciation scene is impregnated with movement and drama, as the angel descends towards the Virgin with hands folded, carrying a lily only faintly described with a few flashes of the pen. The languid Virgin is shown seated, resting her left arm on a kneeler and touching her right hand to her chest in acceptance of her fate as the mother of God. Giordano has cleverly included a cat perched on a chair in the lower left corner of the sheet. The cat is positioned with its back to the viewer, perhaps slightly alarmed by the arrival of the angel, as both we and it witness the scene. Our drawing does not relate to a known painting of this subject by Giordano, but given its impressive size and spirited treatment, it may well have been intended as a finished work in its own right, produced be sold to drawing collectors. The attribution of this drawing to Luca Giordano has been confirmed by Professor Giuseppe Scavizzi (written communication, 27 May 2019), who dates it to the 1660’s.

This drawing is a preparatory study for an engraving of the same subject now preserved in a major public collection. The final print—slightly larger—closely follows the reversed composition of this sheet. Subject In the center of the Gothic nave, five bearers carry a catafalque toward a freshly dug grave—a tribute to the naval heroes often buried in the Nieuwe Kerk. This funerary motif, familiar from Dutch painting (e.g. Emanuel de Witte, 1657), evokes the vanitas theme and the transience of earthly life. Technical Analysis Goeree’s use of red chalk for the architecture and ink for the figures reveals his working method: the chalk lines could be used to produce a counterproof restoring the correct orientation of the architecture, while the inked figures remained adjustable before the design was transferred to the copper plate. The 1564 Medici Danti Map of California

M.AG” [1564…the month of August] In the 1560s Cosimo I de’Medici, the powerful Duke of Florence, undertook a major renovation of the Palazzo Vecchio, the venerable palace that to this day dominates the city at the Piazza della Signoria. For the Sala della Guardaroba, literally the wardrobe room, but in fact the storeroom of the Duke’s most precious holdings, Cosimo conceived of a grand decorative project that was to reflect in one space the entire cosmos --both an indication of the Duke’s ambition and an allusion to his name. The plan, supervised by Giorgio Vasari, involved the construction of walnut cabinets to contain the Medici treasures, on the outside doors of which were to be placed large hand-painted maps specially commissioned to document and illustrate the current knowledge of the world. Portraits of famous men were to decorate the tops of the cabinets and two large globes –one representing the terrestrial world, the other celestial—were to descend from openings in the ceiling. The commission for the maps, inspired by Ptolemy’s Geographia, was given to the celebrated mathematician and cosmographer, Fra Egnazio Danti (Perugia 1536-1585 Alatri). Fifty-three maps were ultimately created. Thirty were conceived and executed by Danti between 1563 and 1575. The remaining twenty-three were completed by Stefano Bonsignori between 1576 and 1686. They remain in place in Florence in the room for which they were created. The present work is an exact-size painted, drawn and inscribed copy of Danti’s map of California...

Eugene Davidson Daniels, Palmer, Massachusetts, 1871 This extraordinary manuscript map is a rare survivor of the devotional and educational culture of New England in the first half of the nineteenth century. Although at first glance resembling a large-scale engraving or printed publication, this precisely rendered wall map was entirely drawn by hand, the product of meticulous research by a minister working in isolation in rural Maine. The map shows New Testament era cities, towns, tribal areas, and political borders as well as physical features such as rivers, lakes, mountains, and hills (indicated by half-tone cross-hatching). On to this geographically accurate rendering of the Holy Land, Rogers has located and inscribed significant locales mentioned in the Gospels and has annotated these places with relevant citations from the Bible. He further records these by plotting the travels of Jesus on what resemble a series of trails across the Holy Land. Each is distinguished by a different pattern of dots and dashes – correlated to an explanatory table at the lower right. From this we know that these lines document the “Flight into Egypt and return,” “Travels of Christ from Nazareth to Jerusalem and return,” “Travels from the commencement of his Ministry to the first Passover,” “Travels from the first and the second Passover,” “Travels from Jerusalem to Galilee after the 2nd Passover,” and “Travels from the third Passover to the Crucifixion.” An inset map of “Jerusalem...
