Description: This expressive watercolour figure study by French Post-Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu captures an artist absorbed in the act of drawing. With only a handful of deft strokes and washes of muted greys, violets, and soft reds, Neveu conveys posture, character, and concentration with remarkable economy. The seated figure leans over a sketchboard, legs crossed, engrossed in his work; behind him, a second loosely defined figure appears in vibrant blue and rose tones, adding depth and a sense of studio atmosphere.
Neveu’s training at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris equipped him with a masterful command of gesture drawing, and this piece exemplifies the speed, confidence, and observational clarity of traditional French atelier practice. Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
