About the Item
This fine renaissance study, attributed to Bolognese painter Prospero Fontana (1512-1597), depicts two cherubs seated in clouds, playing with the arms of Mars. Elegantly mastered in brown ink with washes of watercolour and 'lumi di biacca'. The artwork has been float mounted in a gilt-effect frame with wash-line matt. Unsigned. Inscribed illegibly in pencil to the upper left corner. Provenance: Clarkes Auctions, purchased by our client from Christie's Rome, catalogue number 37, 12th November 1974. On handmade laid.
