About the Item

A fantastic example of Marsh’s renowned depictions of ladies walking in downtown Manhattan. This richly worked ink and wash composition captures a sidewalk populated by stylish women parading past towering architectural forms. The women’s contoured silhouettes, accentuated with confident brushstrokes and animated hatching, appear both idealized and observational, a duality that lies at the heart of Marsh’s social realist ethos. Dating to the mid-1940s, this drawing is characteristic of Marsh’s ongoing fascination with public performance and spectacle. The trio of women walking on the left, shown in lively conversation, reflect his enduring interest in female camaraderie and fashion in public space. To the right, a more ambiguous vignette unfolds: two women are depicted with contrasting levels of definition in front of a slouched man. Every hat brim, heel, and pleat is conveyed with brisk precision and theatricality. Even the background, composed of a fluted column, balustrade, and encroaching shadows, is rendered with a fluid grace that frames the human drama at the center. The work is double-sided and features a less-finished depiction of an assorted line of figures on the verso. This work is ink and wash on paper and is stamped on the reverse by Senator William Benton (owner of half of the Marsh estate). It is housed in a wonderful wood frame with UV acrylic glazing on both sides, to reveal the work on the back. Size: 22 1/4 inches tall by 29 3/4 inches wide (sheet) 31 3/4 inches tall by 39 3/8 inches wide by 1 1/4 inches deep (frame) Provenance: The artist; Collection of Senator William Benton (whom acquired half of Marsh’s estate); Sotheby’s, New York, June 22, 1984, lot 312; Collection of Sidney Rothberg About the artist: Born in Paris, Reginald Marsh was an American artist recognized for his Social Realist paintings of New York City life in the first half of the 20th century. Rejecting abstraction, Marsh included crowded Coney Island beach scenes, vaudeville and burlesque shows, women, and jobless men on the Bowery among his favorite subjects. Marsh was a prolific drawer as well, filling books with sketches made on streets, beaches, and public transportation. He painted in egg tempera, oils, watercolors, and ink, and produced many prints as well. Condition: Good overall condition. Three small vertical tears along the lower margin, the largest being approximately 3”. No apparent restoration. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
