About the Item
Pen and ink on light-weight cream wove paper, 10 3/8 x 14 3/4 inches (273 x 375 mm), the full sheet. Titled and inscribed in ink in the lower recto in English. Significant loss at the bottom right corner, as well as a significant repaired tear in the area of the center-right lower sheet edge, which results in skinning and the loss of a portion of the inscription.
The Convento dei Cappucini was founded in 1549, when the Capuchin friars, welcomed to Syracuse by Bishop Girolamo Beccadelli, settled near the Greek theater. Due to the unhealthy air, the location was abandoned, and in 1582 work began on the construction of the new convent complex, built on top of the Greek stone quarries known as latomie (from the Greek dal greco lâs "stone" e témnō "to cut"), now called "Latomie dei Cappuccini" (used by the friars as a vegetable garden and orchard for several centuries).
Now best known through the legacy of the Villa Politi, Salvatore Politi was from a dynasty of painters from Siracusa, and an integral member of the city’s aristocracy through the 19th century. The villa was completed on 1862, having been designed by his wife, Austrian noblewoman Theresa L’Audien. In its modern incarnation the building exists as The Grand Hotel Villa Politi. The Villa is a rich part of Siracusa’s history due to its unique location in the Latomie dei Cappuccini, and the villa itself, which was a former noble residence frequented by a string of notable historical figures, heads of state and dignitaries. In more modern times, the villa was used as a base by Winston Churchill during the allied invasion of Italy.
