French late 20th century watercolour and gouache study for the series 'Alexander and His Army' by Stephane Lovighi-Bourgogne. Presented in plain wood frame.
A strong and forceful design for one of his larger canvases, a limited yet successful colour palette.
Stéphane Lovighi-Bourgogne is a French self-taught painter. Born in Dijon in 1968, he lives in the south of France. At the start of his career, he painted the people he met. His technique was inspired by twentieth-century artists such as Chaïm Soutine, Lucian Freud and Picasso.
Then, in flight from a reality punctuated by suffering, he created a world born of his dreams, his fantasies and his fears. His style has gradually become identified as a new genre, the « transfigurative ». His sensitivity is apparent to the viewer who alone can judge the artist's expression of emotions. At times, painting represents an outlet for him and at times it is introspective, but it has certainly become indispensable to his life. Love for others, love of others — that is what he paints.
