Original drawing Handsigned Unique piece EDOUARD (EDY) LEGRAND French, 1892–1970 Edy-Legrand, whose real name is Edward Louis Warschawsky Leon, born in Bordeaux in 1892, died in Bonnieux in 1970. He was a French illustrator and painter. He made the first part of his career in advertising illustration and literature. Later, his work was devoted to painting. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris, the Art Academy in Munich, and then lived and worked for Tolmer Publishing House in Paris for much of his career. After the Second World War, he spent much time in New York where he worked as an illustrator for various publishers. Legrand was born in Bordeaux, France to a French mother and a Russian-Jewish father. In 1919, as a young painter , Edy-Legrand created the first children's book, Macao and Cosmage or experience happiness, for the New French Review. The compositions are colored by hand by Jean Saudé. This album was greeted with exceptional praise since the 1980s and applauded as a milestone in the history of illustrated book for children. In 1932, Edy-Legrand participated in the first World Exhibition of engraved works of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he represented France. In this exhibit was also work by Picasso, Matisse and Derain, but Edy-Legrand was the only one to receive an honorable mention. Subsequently, he moved to Rabat , in Morocco. Of this period, Jacques Majorelle wrote: "In Morocco, Edy-Legrand is fascinated by the elements of life that he discovered in the unceasing movement of crowds and the vibration of color by the play of light on the costumes and decor. The show is so totally pictorial he complains, at first, to be obliged to fight against the temptation to faithfully reproduce external reality [...]. In Chowdhury’s more recent works the sensory experiences of cloth, bolsters, sofas and the human body are cross-projected to produce an uncanny world of tran-substantiated tumescence and flaccidness. Jogen Chowdhury has been widely acknowledged to be, the master of the unbroken line. Like Léger, Chowdhury has been stirred by the linear Kalighat pat tradition, but his lines are emotive and used to express and suggest the character of a person. This is done by, distorting the form without breaking the line and in the world of young, contemporary art; distortion has been Jogen Chowdhury’s most significant impact. Perhaps, because of this, a common observation of his work is that his “people” are caricatures. The person feels familiar to the viewer but it is far more individualised – the face is imaginary but the psyche or characteristics are real. The power and beauty of his technique and line is this play between the known and unknown. In Jogen Chowdhury’s work, the figure is always in the foreground, it is primary, it conveys everything. He uses colour to give volume to his figures and the fluidity of his lines bring a sensual aspect to his forms. About the Artist and his work : Born : Born 1939 in Daharpara Village, Faridpur, Bangladesh. Jogen Chowdhury is an eminent Indian painter and considered an important painter of 21st century India. Family Background : His father Pramatnath Chowdhury was a Brahmin zamindar. Both his parents took interest in art, Jogen Chowdhury’s father Pramatnath Chowdhury painted several mythological scenes from the village theatres and also sculpted various Hindu icons. Whereas his mother was an expert in Alpana drawings. 1939-47 Jogen Chowdhury lived in a village atmosphere. And after partition in 1948, the whole family shifted. Till 1951 the whole family stayed at the police department quarter of his uncle, where on the walls Jogen Chowdhury painted his first painting, 1962 Jogen Chowdhury was employed as Designer in the Handloom Board. Education : 1955-60: Studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata. 1965 : He went to paris to study in Ecole des Beaux Arts, in William Hayter’s Atelier 17. Georges Scott, or Scott de Plagnolle (his full name wasGeorges Bertin Scott de Plagnolle ), was born on June 10 1873 in Paris, he was a painter and illustrator. He studied at the Alsatian School in Paris, where he drew a lot: “I have always drawn […]. My father was a painter and illustrator. I was born in a workshop ”. Fatherless in 1884, he studied at the Beaux-Arts, then was one of the pupils of Édouard Detaille, he was a member of French artists outside the competition in 1897. Painter and illustrator, he worked for various periodicals, including Cocorico and L'Illustration where his first drawing was published on March 19, 1892 (“La catastrophe d'Anderlues”). In 1911, the Minister of War Adolphe Messimy asked Scott and Detaille for studies to renovate the uniforms of the French Army: if their projects were not adopted, some were published in newspapers such as L'Illustration in March 1912 he covered as a war correspondent for the newspaper the First Balkan War, with the Bulgarian Army. RICHARD WESTALL, RA (1765-1836) Cupid Sleeping; from a poem of Mrs Robinson - The Duchess of Devonshire Discovers the Sleeping Cupid Watercolour on paper, oval 36 by 44.5 cm., 14 ¼ by 18 in. (frame size 55 by 66 cm., 21 ¾ by 26 in.) Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1792, no.448. Richard Westall was bon in Reepham, near Norwich. Initially apprenticed to a London silver engraving he began studying at the Royal Academy Schools from 1785 and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1784 and 1836. Westall became an Associate member of the Royal Academy in 1792 and a full member in 1794. Westall painted in both oil and watercolour, his works being romantic and neoclassical in style. He contributing to both Boydell’s Shakespeare Gallery and Fuseli’s Milton Gallery and was also a prolific book illustrator of both fiction and poetry including works by Sir Walter Scott and Byron, whose portrait he also painted. For a time he was also art master to the young Princess Victoria. This is probably Westall’s 1792 Royal Academy exhibit (no.448). The subject was inspired by the poem Cupid Sleeping by the poetess-actress Mary Darby Robinson, which had been published in the previous year. The poem was dedicated to Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire and the picture show the Duchess discovering the sleeping cupid who she then relieves of his bow and arrows. Mrs Robinson was not only the Duchess’s protégée but also the first public mistress of the Prince of Wales. William Nutter’s engraving of Westall’s picture was also dedicated to the Duchess of Devonshire. Yitzhak Danziger Genre: Expressionist Subject: People Medium: Ink Surface: Paper Dimensions w/Frame: 17" x 17" Yitzhak Danziger (Hebrew: יצחק דנציגר‎‎; 26 June 1916 – 11 July 1977) was an Israeli sculptor. He was one of the pioneer sculptors of the Canaanite Movement, and later joined the "Ofakim Hadashim" (New Horizons) group. orn in Berlin in 1916, Izhak Danziger moved to Palestine in 1923. From 1934-1937 Danziger studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. During the 1940s he worked in Paris with Zadkine and Brancusi. In the 1950s he exhibited in London at the Institute of Contemporary Art. He is considered to be one of Israel's most important sculptors. His work, which consists largely of environmental pieces, has been exhibited at the Hisrshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C. In 1969 Danziger was awarded the Sandberg Prize by the Israel museum. He died in 1977. When discussing Chariot II, Mordechai Omer compares it to a work of similar subject by Alberto Giacometti. He explains that Danziger, unlike Giacometti, removes the figure, leaving only the chariot itself. Omer eloquently explains that "The vehicle designed to serve the needs of the person inside is devoid of this human presence, with only the memories of its headlong downhill journeys leaving their mark in the parts of a half-ruined, half-standing chariot, allowing wide scope for the viewer's imagination. If Giacometti's chariots reminded him of hospital pharmacy wagons, Danziger's gleaming brass chariots...

Christopher Ganz Flayed Wax-Cast Figure colored pens 10h x 13.50w in 25.40h x 34.29w cm CG0020 -ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey, and Michael Mazur. Christopher is now an associate professor of printmaking and drawing at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
