Christopher Ganz Kayla 2021 Charcoal and chalk on tinted paper 18h x 24w in 45.72h x 60.96w cm CG0077 -ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey, and Michael Mazur. Christopher is now an associate professor of printmaking and drawing at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Original drawing Handsigned Unique piece EDOUARD (EDY) LEGRAND French, 1892–1970 Edy-Legrand, whose real name is Edward Louis Warschawsky Leon, born in Bordeaux in 1892, died in Bonnieux in 1970. He was a French illustrator and painter. He made the first part of his career in advertising illustration and literature. Later, his work was devoted to painting. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris, the Art Academy in Munich, and then lived and worked for Tolmer Publishing House in Paris for much of his career. After the Second World War, he spent much time in New York where he worked as an illustrator for various publishers. Legrand was born in Bordeaux, France to a French mother and a Russian-Jewish father. In 1919, as a young painter , Edy-Legrand created the first children's book, Macao and Cosmage or experience happiness, for the New French Review. The compositions are colored by hand by Jean Saudé. This album was greeted with exceptional praise since the 1980s and applauded as a milestone in the history of illustrated book for children. In 1932, Edy-Legrand participated in the first World Exhibition of engraved works of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he represented France. In this exhibit was also work by Picasso, Matisse and Derain, but Edy-Legrand was the only one to receive an honorable mention. Subsequently, he moved to Rabat , in Morocco. Of this period, Jacques Majorelle wrote: "In Morocco, Edy-Legrand is fascinated by the elements of life that he discovered in the unceasing movement of crowds and the vibration of color by the play of light on the costumes and decor. The show is so totally pictorial he complains, at first, to be obliged to fight against the temptation to faithfully reproduce external reality [...]. About the Artist and his work : Born : Born 1939 in Daharpara Village, Faridpur, Bangladesh. Jogen Chowdhury is an eminent Indian painter and considered an important painter of 21st century India. Family Background : His father Pramatnath Chowdhury was a Brahmin zamindar. Both his parents took interest in art, Jogen Chowdhury’s father Pramatnath Chowdhury painted several mythological scenes from the village theatres and also sculpted various Hindu icons. Whereas his mother was an expert in Alpana drawings. 1939-47 Jogen Chowdhury lived in a village atmosphere. And after partition in 1948, the whole family shifted. Till 1951 the whole family stayed at the police department quarter of his uncle, where on the walls Jogen Chowdhury painted his first painting, 1962 Jogen Chowdhury was employed as Designer in the Handloom Board. Education : 1955-60: Studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata. 1965 : He went to paris to study in Ecole des Beaux Arts, in William Hayter’s Atelier 17.
