Late 17th-early18th century Drawing
Pen and brown ink , brush and gray wash on paper
att. to Georg Philipp Rugendas (1666 – 1742)
bears a period ink inscription in bottom margin “Georg Philipp Rugendas geboren 1666” , which in our opinion identifies the artist.
dimensions : Sheet 6 1/4 x 5 1/2 in. (15.9 x 14 cm.), Frame: 13 1/2 x 12 in. (34.3 x 30.5 cm.)
Rugendas was a battle and military genre painter and engraver born in the Free Imperial City of Augsburg in what is now Bavaria, Germany.
He was a pupil of Isaak Fisches, an historical painter, and took Bourguignon or Tempesta for his models, but formed his style more especially through the study of the various phases of the military profession, from real life.
During the siege and pillage of Augsburg in 1703, he famously exposed himself to great danger by drawing, in the midst of the engagements, the scenes around him. \
His works can be seen in most major European and American museums
