Early Twentieth Century Italian Lakes Landscape a Large Watercolour of the Villa Balbianello near Bellagio, Lake Como Italy. This is one of the most iconic views of the Villa Balbianello showing the steps up from the water and the beautiful flowers and sculptures that are so redolent of this much painted scene. The hazy mountains are in the background and the painting is suffused in soft light, the colours are strong and the painting is in good condition. It was purchased in 1968 by an English couple on holiday celebrating their Wedding Anniversary and it has been in that family ever since.
Alberto Prosdocimi 1852 - 1925 was an Italian artist of great merit and standing in the art world. Prosdocimi was known for his painting of large watercolours and manuscript illuminator. He often painted Venice in pale and bright watercolours but he painted in other beautiful locations too. He trained in his father's studio and then at the world famous Academia of Venice. Like his father he was a respected manuscript illuminator and he copied the Grimani Breviary held in the Library of San Marco at Venice.
This is an absolutely stunning depiction of this most beautiful scene by an artist at the top of his game.
