The Archibald Russell was one of the last great tall ships to be built in Britain. In 1905, she was built of steel by Scott Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Greenock. She was rigged as a four-masted barque carrying royals over double topgallant sails. Her first voyage was in 1906. In December 1923, she was sold to Gustaf Erikson, Mariehamn and put on the Australian wheat trade. In 1941 she was detained by the British government. In March 1948 she was returned to Erikson but didn't go to sea. In 1949 she was scrapped.

Arthur Briscoe was a painter in oil and watercolour and etcher of marine subjects. Educated at Shrewsbury School, Briscoe subsequently studied art at the Slade under Fred Brown and at the Académie Julian in Paris. Subsequently, he devoted his time sailing. Arthur Briscoe painted and wrote on yachting subjects including Handbook on Sailing under the nom de plume of Clove Hitch.
Arthur Briscoe decided to become an artist after returning from a World trip with his father, a prominent Liverpool businessman. He studied at the Slade and the Académie Julian in Paris and, upon his return to London, Briscoe initially illustrated books with a strong Pre-Raphaelite influence.
In 1899 he acquired a studio in Malden, Essex, and bought a 3 ton cutter which, with his young family, he would spend eight or nine months a year, sailing to Calais, along the Belgian coast and through the Dutch waterways, constantly sketching and painting in both oil and watercolor.
In 1922, after a meeting with the etcher James McBey, Briscoe returned to etching once more producing plates of some of his sea sketches. The two artists sailed together in Briscoe's, forty-ton yacht, the "Golden Vanity." Briscoe produced 189 etchings dealing with the sea and the sailing ship. His works were eagerly sought after and purchased by collectors throughout the 1920s and 1930s. His work was always technically accurate and very evocative of the last years of square-rigged sailing ships. Briscoe left an invaluable historical record of the workings of the last great commercial vessels.

Arthur John Trevor Briscoe
Muirhead Bone was born in Partick, a suburb of Glasgow in 1876. As a young man, he was apprenticed to a firm of architects and in the evenings attended classes at the Glasgow School of Art. Aware his vocation was art, and not architecture, he devoted his time almost exclusively to drawing. He continually sketched the streets, buildings, and slums of Glasgow imbuing the urban decay with dignity and sentiment he so admired in the work of the Dutch artists whose townscapes he had studied in the Glasgow Corporation Art Galleries. Bone moved to London in 1901, holding his first exhibition at the Carfax Gallery in 1902. His success both critically and financially was rapid. His status as an etcher in the early years of the last century placed him among the world's most celebrated artists. It is not an exaggeration to say that his international reputation among collectors and the curators of the 'Great Print Rooms' of Europe and America was without parallel. He was appointed the first Official War Artist in World War I and was the doyen of War Artists in the Second World War. He was instrumental in the foundation of The Imperial War Museum and became a Trustee of The Tate and The National Gallery. He was knighted for his services to art in 1937.

Ship LUCY G. DOW
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
The strength of a great ship portrait lies with its overall striking composition blended with an attention to detail. Charles Sidney Raleigh was extremely skilled with both elements, and this is one of his finest works. An American full-rigged ship of large proportions, LUCY G. DOW is one of many ships owned by Maine interests, where the ship would be locally built and consortium owned. More Maine captains owned part of their ships than any other East Coast region, it appears through an informal survey of lists.
Note the fine details of the captain and crew hard at work onboard off the coast. The numerous buildings are clustered on the peninsular stretch with a pier coming out near the lighthouse’s walkway. At the distance, ship masts...
