We note a small tear in the upper center of the pastel about 1 cm and a few small, faint spots in the sky . Good overall condition.
Roqueplan began his career as an apprentice with Abel de Pujol and then Baron Gros, in whose studio he became friends with Paul Huet. He competed for the Prix de Rome in the historical landscape category, but failed several times. His landscapes nevertheless met with some success from their first exhibition at the Salon of 1822. Camille Roqueplan, best known for his historical and literary compositions, nonetheless contributed to the development of a naturalistic approach to landscape, within a small group of Romantic painters. Some of his compositions can be compared with those of Eugène Isabey. Roqueplan's pastels are particularly rare.
