Watson was an etcher and painter of portraits, landscapes and architectural subjects. He was born in Norwich, lived in London and exhibited from 1872. He worked and travelled in Britain, France, Holland and Italy. Examples of his work are in the collection of the Victoria
Albert Museum, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery and Norwich Castle Museum.
The Rows of Great Yarmouth were a series of 145 narrow cobbled alleyways within the medieval city walls. Many of them still survive. Watson’s 1885 etching of the same view of this row is titled Fishermen’s Homes on the East Coast. A version of the etching is in the collection the British Museum and appears in the Catalogue of the Etched and Engraved Work of Charles John Watson, 1931, no.49.
