Charles March Gere RA RWS was an English painter, illustrator of books, and stained glass and embroidery designer associated with the Arts and Crafts movement.
He painted his signal work in 1897 entitled The Lady of Grey Days.The painting was purchased in 1912 and given to Aurora Howard, a descendant of the Earl of Carlisle (of Castle Howard). It was last seen in public in 1988 when it was included in the Barbican exhibition The Last Romantics and used as a poster to advertise the exhibition on most London Underground stations.
A member of the Birmingham Group of artist-craftsmen that formed around Joseph Southall, Gere taught at the Birmingham School of Art under Edward R. Taylor and illustrated many books for William Morris's 'Kelmscott Press', including the frontispiece to Morris's own News from Nowhere.

Charles March Gere, RA, RWS
Gere was born in Gloucester and studied at the Birmingham School of Art under E R Taylor. He joined the staff of the art school in 1893. In the 1890s he worked as an illustrator, contributing to The Quest and books illustrated by the Birmingham Group and designing the frontispiece for William Morris’s News from Nowhere (Kelmscott Press, 1892). In his early career he was involved in a number of the arts and crafts, designing embroidery, metalwork and stained glass and painting the reredos in the Chapel at Madresfield. Gradually, however, he became almost exclusively a landscape painter. In about 1904 he and his sister Margaret settled in Painswick, near Stroud, and many of his subjects were found in the surrounding Cotswolds, which was to become his favourite painting ground. He exhibited at the New Gallery, Society of Painters in Tempera, Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Royal Watercolour Society and Art Workers Guild. A memorial exhibition was held in Gloucester in 1963.

Leon Underwood was a British sculptor, wood engraver, painter and writer of the twentieth century. Underwood was born 25 December 1890 in London, and studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic from 1907 to 1910, the R.C.A. from 1910 to 1913, and at the Slade School from 1919 to 1920 after undertaking war service between 1914 and 1918 during which he held the position of Captain in the R.E. Camouflage Section. Underwood was awarded a premium in the Rome Prize competition in 1920 but instead of going to Italy went to Iceland. He started his own school of drawing in 1921, and held his first one-man exhibition at the Chenil Galleries in 1922. He visited Holland in 1911, Russia in 1913, Dalmatia and Italy in 1925; he went to the United States and Canada between 1926 and 1927 during which time he published Animalia; he travelled in Mexico during 1928, studying Mayan and Aztec sculpture, and in Spain studying cave paintings. Underwood reopened his drawing school in 1931 and founded the magazine The Island, to which Henry Moore and C. R. W. Nevinson contributed. He wrote Art for Heaven's Sake in 1934, and served in Civil Defence Camouflage from 1939 to 1942. In 1945 Underwood visited West Africa and wrote several books on African...
