About the Item

A very fine signed and dated 1851 English Old Master watercolor depicting a figure fishing on the River Conwy above Llanrwst, by David Cox senior. Excellent quality and good size watercolor by this important English artist. Signed and dated lower left and with label verso from the well respected watercolor dealership Albany Gallery, London. The work is presented framed and glazed and in excellent original condition. Artist: David Cox (English, 1783-1859) Title: Fishing on the River Conwy above Llanrwst Medium: Watercolour on wove paper Painting size: 10 x 14 inches (26 x 36 cm) Frame size: 20.5 x 22.5 inches (52 x 58 cm) David Cox (29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of Impressionism. He is considered one of the greatest English landscape painters, and a major figure of the Golden Age of English watercolour. Although most popularly known for his works in watercolour, he also painted over 300 works in oil towards the end of his career, now considered "one of the greatest, but least recognised, achievements of any British painter." His son, known as David Cox the Younger (1809–1885), was also a successful artist.

A fine late 19th century watercolour depicting fishermen bringing in the days catch on the Anglesea Coast by James Aitken. The artist specialised in coastal scenes around the British Isles and is very well regarded. Signed lower right. Artist: James Aitken (British, active 1880-1935) Title: On the Anglesea Coast Medium: Watercolour on paper laid on card Size: 15 x 21.5 in (38 x 55 cm) unframed Condition: Very good original condition Provenance: Private collection, Kent James Aitken was born at Newburgh in Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1853/54. He is known to have been active as an artist from 1880 and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1894-1918. He painted mainly maritime scenes in England and Scotland, and also made several visits to the continent, to paint in France, Italy and Switzerland. From 1894 he visited the Isle of Man, and liked it so much that he moved there permanently with his family in 1911. They took up residence in Port St. Mary. James Aitken exhibited works at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute, the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Cambrian Society as well as in the provinces. He was a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts. Today, he has works in the Warrington Museum, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Merseyside Maritime Museum. A beautiful mid 20th century French naif oil on canvas depicting a man fishing on a riverbank by André Bouquet. The artist featured in Anatole Jakovsky's ''Peintres Naifs'' which is known as the bible of 20th century naif painters. The work is signed lower left and presented in it's original painted and gilded reverse profile gallery frame. Artist: André Bouquet (French, 1897-1987) Title: Fisherman on a River Bank Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 19 x 24.5 inches (48 x 62 cm) including the frame André Bouquet was a butcher by trade, who had his stall in open air markets. In order to have more time to paint, however, he became a factory cook and later a foreman in the same factory. He lived only for his painting, which once he stopped working he did every day of the week, including Sundays. He is a sensitive and delicate artist, especially when depicting Parisian suburbs, of which he has caught the atmosphere remarkably. He also painted numerous snow landscapes.
