About the Item
Original watercolor on archival paper of the mountains of Saint Maurice in Switzerland by the well known American artist, Dodge MacKnight. Signed lower left and titled and dated 1894 lower left. Condition is very good. Overall framed measurements in a one inch wide black painted wood frame are 23.5 by 29.25 inches. Under glass.
Saint-Maurice is a city in the Swiss canton of Valais and the capital of the district of Saint-Maurice. On 1 January 2013, the former municipality of Mex merged into the municipality of Saint-Maurice.
Dodge MacKnight described his style best when he said he strove for “picturesqueness of design with brilliant color.” Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1860, MacKnight worked as a painter of scenery for local theatres until leaving for Paris at the age of 26. There he pursued the fine arts, studying painting under Fernand Cormon, and befriending Vincent Van Gogh, who invited him to join the artist colony in Arles. Although he did visit Van Gogh briefly in southern France, he declined the invitation to join the colony and instead continued his travels throughout Europe for the next several years. He returned to America in 1897 with his French wife and son, later settling in East Sandwich, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. MacKnight died in 1950.

George Douglas Brewerton received lessons in art from Prof. Robert W. Weir at West Point where his father was Superintendent.
